Why Dominical instead of Tamarindo?

Are you planning on taking a surf vacation in Costa Rica and you are not sure of which location to choose?  We think this articule can help you to decide!

What´s so special about each one of this locations, and what makes them different to the other ones?

Lets start talking about Tamarindo, this is one of the most popular surf destinations since the ¨The Endless Summer 2¨ (popular surf movie) put Costa Rica on the map.  Since then lots of surfers and travelers from all over the world came to Tamarindo to actually go to the surf spots that were film in this movie. This small town became a bigger city and now is one of the most crowded place in the country to learn how to surf. Let´s talk a bid about the PROS and CONS of this area.

Pros:

  • It has the Liberia airport only one hour away.
  • Beautiful white sand beaches and lots of attractions and things to do.
  • All types of lodging and restaurant options you can think of.
  • Witches Rock and Ollies point (world class waves, for intermediate and advance surfers) are only a few hours away by boat.

Cons:

  • It´s extremely crowded, this is not a good thing when you are learning how to surf!
  • There is no consistency in the waves specially in the summer months (Jan-June), it could be flat for months.
  • It became a city, there are more buildings than wildlife so this makes it hotter than any other place in the country.
  • Locals in the water can be a little rude if you get in their way.

What about Dominical?

This town has some of the most consistent waves in the country but not many people know about it. It’s definitely not one of the most popular surf destinations because it’s still a very small town and it’s not as advertise as some other places in the country that has bigger development corporations pushing to make it grow, but Dominical can please all your traveling and surfing needs without a doubt. Lets talk about it´s PROS and CONS.

Pros:

  • It’s truly a green jewel. Its natural beauty and amazing waves makes this town a surfers paradise.
  • Consistent waves all year round with several different spots for all levels within minutes away.
  • No crowds.
  • Captivating vibes, cozy and friendly atmosphere.
  • You’ll get to experience the real ultimate surf adventure in the tropics, the weather, the people, and the activities to do around here are outstanding!

Cons:

  • Dominical is a pretty powerful wave and sometimes is necessary to go to the beach next door (3kms away) to surf smaller waves, if you are not part of a surf camp or you don’t have a vehicle, transportation could be an issue. (As a side option there are taxis available for $6 each way).
  • Closest International Airport is SJO which is 3.5hrs away. Second closest is a Domestic airport (Quepos) only 25min away.

Your vacation could be amazing in either place but it really depends on what you are looking for, if you are more social and like to stay in packs, like to party hard and easy small surf  Tamarindo could be your best option.

If you are more in a relax, healthy, tranquil note where you wanna exercise and have a good time exploring, meeting  easy going people and surfing everyday then we recommend you to try Dominical beach.
